The Arizona Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration is a series of events in honor of MLK Jr.’s contributions to establishing civil rights for all Americans and his legacy of promoting cultural diversity, awareness and unity. Each year, the celebration hosts a community day of service in which thousands of Arizonans volunteer their time at various local non-profits, a candlelight concert featuring gospel choir performances, a youth art exhibit and a symposium on youth development complete with educational workshops and networking sessions open to the public. At the festival, attendees are treated to a great lineup of art vendors, entertainment, cuisine and community organizations providing free health-related services. The celebration’s highlight, the MLK March in Phoenix, gathers thousands of Arizonans in a march symbolic of King’s 1968 march through Washington, D.C. With several events held during January throughout the celebration, there are many ways for residents and visitors of all backgrounds to participate and help fulfill MLK Jr.’s dream.
